Life has a curious way of reminding us that we don’t have all the answers.
Sometimes it happens in a meeting where someone asks a question we can’t answer. Sometimes it’s a recipe that doesn’t turn out quite the way we imagined, despite following it a dozen times before. Sometimes it’s on a farm, where rain ignores the forecast and nature quietly reminds us who is really in charge.
And sometimes, it happens on a bowling green.
Lately, I’ve lost a few games.
Of course I would rather have won. We all like to see our hard work rewarded. But somewhere between the final bowl and the drive home, I realised that losing didn’t make me any less capable. It simply reminded me that there is still room to grow.
I think that’s true of life as well.
We are all works in progress. No matter how experienced we become, there is always someone who knows a little more, does something a little better, or sees the world from a different perspective. Instead of letting that discourage us, perhaps we should allow it to make us curious.
Because curiosity keeps us teachable.
The danger isn’t losing. The danger is believing we’ve made it. That we know enough. That we no longer need advice, correction or practice.
Growth has a funny way of disguising itself. It doesn’t always arrive wrapped in success. Sometimes it arrives wearing disappointment, frustration or even a bruised ego. Only later do we realise those moments shaped us far more than the easy victories ever could.
So if life has been a little harder on you lately, don’t be too quick to judge yourself by today’s result.
Keep practising.
Keep learning.
Keep showing up.
Your story isn’t written in one difficult day, one failed attempt or one disappointing outcome. It’s written in the quiet decision to begin again tomorrow with a little more wisdom, a little more patience and the humility to know that there is always something new to learn.
